What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease, sometimes known as periodontitis, is often caused by poor oral hygiene leading to a buildup of bacterial plaque. Left unchecked, bacteria can attack sensitive gum tissues and cause infections. The first stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis, and without treatment, it can progress to a more advanced condition known as periodontitis. At this stage, it can result in the loss of gum tissue, jawbone tissue, and even teeth.

How is Gum Disease Treated?

Depending on the severity of your condition, there are a variety of gum disease treatments. At Green Leaf Dentistry, we provide high-quality care for our patients suffering from this serious condition.

Scaling and Root Planing:

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning below the gumline that is used to treat the early stages of gum disease. If the pockets or spaces between the teeth and gums are too deep to be treated with a standard cleaning, scaling and root planing will often be recommended. During the scaling, we will remove all the plaque and tartar above and below the gumline all the way down to the bottom of the pocket. Root planing involves smoothing out the teeth roots to help the gums reattach to the teeth.

Localized Chemotherapeutics/Arestin:

This antibiotic is placed directly into infected gum pockets after scaling and root planing. Unlike oral treatment, Arestin is applied locally, delivering the antibiotic right where you need it. Arestin, in conjunction with scaling and root planing, fights harmful bacteria that scaling and root planing alone may not reach.

Is Gum Disease Treatment Expensive?

Every case is unique, so costs will vary depending on your specific needs. During your consultation, we will provide a breakdown of costs for your treatment plan. We are in-network with most major dental insurance plans, and we accept CareCredit and offer Green Leaf Club, an in-house payment plan for qualifying patients.

Dental Crown Lengthening:

During this procedure, excess gum and bone tissue will be reshaped to expose more of your natural tooth. This can be done to one tooth or a complete gum line to expose a healthy, natural-looking smile.
